Statement on the Extension of the Federal Fuel Excise Tax Relief

September 2, 2026

The following is a statement from Anne Kothawala, President and CEO of the Convenience Industry Council of Canada, on the extension of the federal fuel excise tax relief:

“Extending fuel excise tax relief is helpful for both drivers and local store operators. Convenience retailers operate on razor-thin margins and see firsthand how volatile pump prices squeeze household budgets and discretionary spending. By keeping this relief in place, the government is not only putting money directly back into consumers’ pockets at the pump but also supports the foot traffic that local businesses rely on every single day. This news, coming during Convenience Week, and in the face of an uncertain business environment, is welcomed by our retail members.”
