Corner Stores Applaud Fuel Tax Relief for Canadians

The Convenience Industry Council of Canada, representing more than 21,000 locations and 186,000 workers nationwide, is applauding Members of Parliament and Senators for their quick action to pass Bill C-38 – An Act to amend the Excise Tax Act (extension of the federal fuel excise tax relief). This will help both Canadians and small businesses at a time when affordability is under strain.

Convenience store retailers are reliable, front-line providers of everyday essentials in communities across the country, from groceries to gas. While corner stores play a critical role for Canadians across the country, one and a half stores are closing every day because of high input costs, costly regulation, excessive credit card fees and changing business dynamics.

“Keeping our prices competitive is critical to sustaining foot traffic and fuel sales at a time of significant economic pressures,” said Anne Kothawala, President and CEO of CICC. “Fuel tax relief delivers  savings at the pump for Canadian families and businesses navigating compounding fiscal pressures, including tariffs and persistent inflation. The recognition of these challenges by all members of parliament and Canadian Senators is welcomed by our stores.”
